EFT Externship · Albuquerque, NM

What Will I Learn in an Externship?

Hosted by the New Mexico Community for Emotionally Focused Therapy

Participants will:

  • Obtain a clear understanding of the basic experiential and systemic concepts of an Emotionally Focused approach to therapy.
  • View clients within the context of their interpersonal attachments and conceptualize relationship distress and repair based on theories of attachment and emotion.
  • Develop skills in establishing and maintaining an engaged, open, and collaborative alliance with clients.
  • Develop skills in the five moves of the basic macro-intervention, the EFT Tango, to change patterns of affect regulation, models of self and others, strategies for engaging others, and interactional patterns.
  • Develop skills in EFT micro-interventions drawn from experiential and attachment-based systemic models of intervention.
  • Develop skills in overcoming common blocks and impasses in couple therapy and shaping core corrective emotional experiences that lead to constructive dependency and what Rogers termed “existential living.”

Dr. Jinich has also contributed to research on couple therapy, including the planning and supervision of therapists involved in the first multinational randomized clinical trial conducted in Spanish to evaluate the effectiveness of couple therapy, including EFT. In 2025, Dr. Jinich co-authored Deliberate Practice in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, published by the American Psychological Association (APA), alongside Hanna Levenson, Alexandre Vaz, and Tony Rousmaniere. The book provides structured, experiential exercises to help therapists develop clinical competence in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT), refine essential therapeutic skills, and cultivate their own authentic therapeutic style. Along with Natalia Gilabert, he is co-founder and co-director of EFT Academia, an international training center offering specialized courses in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, including work with infidelity, highly conflictual couples, and erotic intimacy and attachment.
